- Works like softwood but wears like hardwood. It's simple to cut and stain. Western Red Cedar holds nails and resists warping. End seal with wax to prevent splitting and checking.
- Your surroundings are elevated by the Western Red Cedar's warm tone and texture. Your home and property are given character by colors that range from deep amber to cinnamon brown.

Japanese Cedar
- a more recent product with promise as a high-quality, less expensive substitute for Western Red Cedar. The pickets tend to split or break during installation because they are thinner and less robust than Western Red Cedar. You shouldn't be required to pay the same price for the fence as you would for one made of Western Red Cedar if the fence business you select uses Japanese Cedar instead.
Chinese Cedar
- Chinese Cedar, which is frequently used by fence businesses due to its reduced cost, is actually fir rather than cedar. It is less suitable for fences and other outdoor buildings than Western Red Cedar because of its weaker resistance to decay and weathering. A Chinese Cedar Picket may typically be distinguished by the thickness of the board.
